5 FACTS: WHAT MAKES BOROSILICATE GLASS SO SPECIAL
Glass is not glass! That’s why we always point out that our EVE glass carafe and FLOWTEA drinking bottle are made of borosilicate glass. BORO-What? Here are the most important facts about what makes your EVE and FLOWTEA so high quality.
Special heat resistance
Maybe you’ve experienced it yourself: you pour boiling water into a glass, there’s a loud bang, and the glass shatters into 1,000 pieces. But how does this happen? If you pour hot tea into a water glass, for example, the inside of the glass heats up very quickly so that the glass expands very quickly. The resulting high tension between the inside and outside quickly causes conventional glass to burst. Borosilicate glass, on the other hand, can withstand boiling water due to its chemical composition and its high melting point (820°). It is therefore very heat resistant. It neither becomes cloudy nor bursts, can also withstand temperature fluctuations and is even temperature-resistant up to 515°. This is why borosilicate glass is so popular in medical technology.
Light but stable
One thing first: glass is glass and therefore fragile. Although the material has a high compressive strength, it cannot be permanently deformed, so that, for example, cracks cannot be prevented in principle in the case of strong external impact. However, due to its special manufacturing process and chemical resistance, borosilicate glass has an extremely high stability. It is exposed to an extremely high temperature in the manufacturing process and immediately cooled down. This sudden cooling leads to a densification of the glass surface and reacts comparatively stably to mechanical loads – and that with a relatively low own weight!
Chemical-free and tasteless
Plastic and plastic – for many consumers, this is a real “no go” when it comes to storing liquids. And not only because these materials often contain questionable ingredients. Drinks stored in plastic containers also often have an altered “stale” aftertaste. Carafes made of borosilicate glass, on the other hand, are free of chemicals and therefore guarantee harmless drinking pleasure. In addition, borosilicate glass is basically odourless and tasteless – a must-have for anyone who wants to enjoy their drink to the full.
Above all: sustainable!
The good news first: borosilicate glass is 100% recyclable and can be reused an infinite number of times without any loss of quality. The even better news afterwards: the glass of borosilicate carafes is three to five times harder than that of carafes made of conventional glass. Thus, glass carafes made of borosilicate have a potentially much longer lifespan and are therefore your long-lasting companion that does not need to be replaced regularly. This saves resources and energy. And you score points with your drinking enjoyment entirely in terms of sustainability.
